ANNAPURNA "OFF THE BEATEN PATH" TREKS
HEA/05 MOUNT FISHTAIL TREK March - May & September - November/December
15 days Camping Trek Grade 3 (Moderate)
"Off the Beaten Path" and exclusive to Himalayan Envpro Adventures
From Pokhara the trail leads away from teahouse routes and through
terraced fields
towards Siklis and the foot of Lamjung Himal, then to Ghachok.
Both are non-tourist
villages with picturesque houses and friendly villagers.
Gachok is in a truly superb setting. It is situated along a high
clifftop which drops
vertically to the Seti Khola river below. To the north, the giant
peaks of Machhapuchhare
(the "Fishtail" mountain), Annapurna IV and II fill the sky.
From here a walk through a pheasant reserve followed by a climb
up a grassy ridgeline
take you to a large plateau at 3200 m. The views from here must
be seen to be believed: Machhapuchhare is directly overhead, to
its left are Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, to
its right Annapurna IV, Annapurna II and Lamjung. Other features
include sightings of
blue mountain sheep and
pheasants and a variety of wildflowers and stands of magnolia
and rhododendron trees.
Groups of other trekkers are extremely rare up here.
This plateau is ideal for establishing a camp for 2 nights in
order to acclimatise.
Another ridgeline leads up to another plateau at 3900 m from where
a Color daytrip can
be made to Mardi Himal Base Camp at approx. 4500 m. From this
vantage point
you can even see the upper two-thirds of Annapurna I,
normally hidden from view. The descent from the 3200 m plateau
mentioned earlier
follows a different route: first through pastures, then through
forest with flower
filled clearings followed by an easy trail along the Mardi Khola
back to Pokhara.
Transport by tourist bus to and from start of trek.
2008 Price for 15 Day Mount Fishtail Trek:
$US 910 per person ex Kathmandu for groups of at least 2 persons
Discounts for groups of 4 or more persons.

HEA/07 ANNAPURNA EXPLORER
"Off the beaten path" camping trek
10 Days Trekking Grade 3 (Moderate)
February - May and October - December
After starting out from Pokhara, this trek soon takes you away
from the teahouse
trails and heads off into beautiful country not often visited
by trekkers.
The route leads through forest of oak and rhododendron and emerges
on a high
ridgetop at approx. 4000 m elevation far above the Modi Khola
valley. Highlight
of this trek is an extensive exploration of this high plateau
with natural low growing
rhododendron gardens (in full flower during April) and face-to-face
views of the
giant snow peaks of Machhapuchhare, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.
Up here you find yourself at the site of one of Machhapuchhare's
base camps,
established before permission to climb this mountain was withdrawn.
In fact the
summit has never been climbed in recorded history, the closest
attempt reached
50 m below the peak. Two of the overnight stops on the return
trek are near
picturesque villages where the influx of foreign visitors has
not made itself felt.
Transport by tourist bus to and from start of trek.
