HOW FIT DO I HAVE TO BE?

Trekking in the Himalayas requires good health and reasonable
physical fitness, this can be improved by a pre-trek training program of
hill-walking, jogging or cycling, plus many types of sport.

GRADE 1
Trekking to altitudes of less than 3000 m/10000ft., easy walking holidays with
the occasional longer walk.

GRADE 2
Easy to moderate trekking to altitudes between 2000m/6500 ft and 3500m/11500 ft for up
to 6 hours a day,these treks do not demand strenuous pre-trek training.

GRADE 3
Moderate trekking to altitudes of 3000 m/10000 ft to 4000 m/13000 ft for up to 7 hours
a day, sometimes including excursions or pass crossings up to 5000 m/16500 ft.
Some pre-trek training is advisable.

GRADE 4
Strenuous trekking to altitudes predominantly above 4000 m/13000 ft. with excursions
and pass crossings of between 5500 m/18000 ft and 6500 m/21500 ft. Pre-trek training
is essential.

Some climbing experience and elementary knowledge of the use of crampons and ice axe
may be required for climbing treks.
